Lube adds to sex, so have fun, er, applying it.
Although it’s a sexual accouterment, there’s just something about lube that’s pretty unsexy. So to break down our stigmas and get to the heart of our lube concerns, I sat down with sexologist and author Logan Leffkof, Ph.D, to get her advice on the slippery stuff.
No one wants to be the one who busts out the lube during a sexual encounter. Why do you think people are sketched out about it?
In the past, lubes have been seen as a problem-solving tool instead of a pleasure enhancing one — but those days are long gone. Research from Indiana University shows 82 percent of users believe lubricant enhances sexual pleasure.
Should we just get over ourselves try using lube already?
Yes! Because sex feels great with lube. It helps makes sex smooth and makes the connection between partners feel even more intimate and comfortable. And it can speed up foreplay and the time to orgasm too. Nearly half of users agree lubricant makes it easier to have an orgasm.
How can someone feel more suave using it?
It should add to sex, not be a distraction. It’s all in the application. You don’t have to wave it around and make a big deal about it. Put some on your fingers and massage it in wherever you want to stimulate.
What type of lube should people get?
The right lube depends upon what you’re looking to do — seriously. Different types of sex require different types of lubrication. Do you want it to add to sex by providing additional sensation? Then one that warms or tingles might be a good idea. Are you planning on having a long marathon bout of sex where your lube is going to need to last? If so, you may want to try a silicon-based lubricant. Finally — and this is really important — don’t use oils or anything oil-based if you’re using a latex condom.
Pros and Cons of different types of lube
Water-based (K-Y Jelly, Astroglide, Maximus)
Pro: These won’t strain your sheets and you won’t be greasy for the rest of your life because they absorb into your skin.
Con: Because they will absorb into your skin, you may have to reapply.
Silicone-based (Wet Platinum, Trojan lubricants)
Pro: These will last much longer that water-based lubes so you won’t have to reapply. They can also be used in water.
Con: They can be messier, difficult to get off your hands and body, and may leave a mark on your sheets.
Oil-based (baby oil, Vaseline, Man Cream)
Pro: None. Not recommended except for guys who want to have a lube for masturbation.
Con: They cannot be used with condoms.
Hot Tip:If you get a lube stain on your sheets, try using an extra-strength detergent or a dish soap designed to dissolve grease.
