During New York Fashion Week, shows aren’t just reserved for the runway. Well-dressed attendees in front rows, streets and after-parties are all in the spotlight. This means the question on everyone’s mind — “What should I wear?” — takes on a whole other level of importance. Natalie Suarez, the model, singer and blogger who documents her NYC adventures — often alongside her sister Dylana — on the site Natalie Off Duty, lets us into her Dumbo loft to show us how she plans a look for the big event.
“During Fashion Week I try to plan my look at least a day in advance,” says Suarez. “I’m always so busy that it’s easier to know what I’m going to wear so I can just sleep in and quickly get ready — otherwise I’m just a wreck.”
A touch of drama
“I picked these Missoni pants because they’re really big and dramatic and will totally stand out for street style and all of that,” she says.
Play with texture
“I love going for a monochromatic look,” says Suarez about the blue velvet wrap top she pairs with the pants. “It’s cropped, it shows a little bit of skin, so it’ll go well with a big, oversized bottom.”
Flats are your friend
“These big pants are already so dramatic, so the flats dress them down,” says Suarez. “The effortless look is more in for Fashion Week, not like stiletto heels or platforms anymore. It’s trying too hard. Everyone is trying to be ‘less is more’ which is cooler and easier.”
“I’m obsessed with hoops. Not like Jenny from the Block — well, kinda like Jenny from the Block, but a little more elevated,” says Suarez.
“You can just wear a white T-shirt and really cool earrings and look done up. It just makes you feel more girly and put together.”
“Everyone during Fashion Week loves to wear sunglasses because they’re tired, and it makes your outfit,” says Suarez. “These are my Kurt Cobain sunglasses. I like them because they’re really retro, and white sunglasses are such a pop with this all-blue look. It will be perfect.”
