Ikea cribs: Wait is over, Gulliver, Snigler back in stock (UPDATE)

Highly rated and much beloved Ikea cribs mysteriously vanished earlier this summer. Suddenly unavailable, mommy message boards lit up with dismay and disappointment over Ikea’s decision to pull popular lines such as the $69 Snigler and the $99 Gulliver.

But as quietly as they came off shelves, Ikea rolled them back out over the weekend, at least in some locations. All three New York metro Ikeas, the South Philadelphia and the Stoughton, Mass. locations all have at least one of the models in stock as of Saturday according to shoppers and Ikea’s call center.

There remains some mystery around the inventory, however, as a call to the store was met with skepticism as the customer service rep had been informed they wouldn’t carry cribs until December. She, however, was able to find them listed as available at several spots. Reports online also said that the cribs were spotted in a Maryland Ikea, and a customer service representative said on Friday that many of locations had the cribs on site and were waiting for the green light to put them on display.

The cribs, which earn an A rating and top recommendation in the popular parent guide Baby Bargains and have fans across the scores of baby message boards, suddenly dropped off Ikea’s website this summer and disappeared off shelves as the company got itself in line with revised safety guidelines issued late last year by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. While Ikea said there was nothing unsafe about the existing models, it’s unclear if any significant changes were made or if they were simply awaiting governmental approval. However, comparing pictures of the previous models of the Gulliver and Snigler to floor models spotted Saturday appears to show an improved, enclosed mattress support system.

Ikea isn’t the only company that had to deal with the new regulations, as the government put a raft of safety changes into place over the past year. Most notably, the traditional and popular drop-side cribs were banned. According to the CPSC’s statement issued on June 28, 2011, some of the new mandatory rules for cribs include:

(1) stopping the manufacture and sale of dangerous, traditional drop-side cribs;

(2) strengthening mattress supports and crib slats;

(3) requiring crib hardware to be more durable;

(4) making safety testing more rigorous.

According to the CPSC, it has recalled more than 11 million dangerous cribs since 2007. Drop-side cribs with detaching side rails were associated with at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths since 2000. Additional deaths have occurred due to faulty or defective crib hardware. The new standards aim to prevent these tragedies and keep children safer in their cribs.

Now that the Ikea models are working their way back into stores, the cult-like following of the Snigler and Gulliver can commence. There were also a few new models originally in the 2012 catalog, but they’re no longer on the website and it’s unclear if they’ll appear later this year.

UPDATE: The cribs are now back online at Ikea.com with a handy inventory listing.
