Experts say mobile phones, tablets and laptops could be the cause of erectile dysfunction and a reduced sperm count. Inventor Joseph Perkins, who became concerned about his own reproductive health after regularly using a laptop at work, wants to protect your package with silver-mesh Wireless Armour underwear. The silver is woven into the fabric to create a so-called Faraday cage to protect your “little swimmers” from electromagnetic rays. The product — available in either boxer briefs or loose trunks — is currently at the funding stage on Indiegogo.com. The London-based physicist tells Metro about the radiation-killing skivvies.
Silver underwear sounds as comfortable as wearing chain mail. Do they not chafe?
[Laughs] People expected a big cage with wires hanging out, but the silver is knitted with a very soft cotton, so they’re actually very comfortable to wear.
Obviously men get worried about their manhood: erectile dysfunction and infertility are two of the biggest concerns. Do you think that this will trade off men’s pride?
I really don’t want to scaremonger people into buying the product. But yes, the fear factor will play a part.
Is your girlfriend keen to keep you fertile?
[Laughs] She is happy that I’m protecting my fertility. But there are no plans for children at the moment.
The underwear is also antimicrobial. Do you think men will be tempted to wear their pants for a few days straight?
You could wear them whilst playing sport and then not necessarily shower until you get home because the silver will eliminate some of the odors and bacteria growth. But I wouldn’t advocate that.
