Lehman College Adult Degree Program

For over 35 years, the Adult Degree Program (ADP) at Lehman College has successfully been helping adults achieve their education and career goals. Currently serving over 1,000 students, with a choice of day, evening, weekend, and online courses, the ADP provides an exceptional array of services for beginning and returning adult students. The bachelor’s degree programs offers over 50 traditional majors as well as interdisciplinary majors which students design themselves with the help of a faculty advisor. The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies gives students a solid grounding in graduate-level liberal arts courses and assists students in focusing their degree on their own particular area of interest. An online RN to BS program, to begin in the fall of 2015, is designed for registered nurses with associate degrees who are licensed in New York State and who desire or require a bachelor’s degree. All ADP programs offer flexibility, personal advising, and the opportunity to earn college credit for life, work, volunteer, and US military experience.

Another attractive aspect of the Adult Degree Program is the availability of introductory liberal arts seminars designed especially for, and open only to, ADP students. The seminars have a multidisciplinary focus and are carefully designed to engage adult students. Some examples of recent ADP courses are, “Food, Health and the Environment: What is the Connection?,” “Unchained Cinema: The Struggle of Human Rights in Film,” “Global Perspectives on Happiness,” and “The Art of Persuasion: The Craft of Political Action.” For newly enrolling or returning adult students, these seminars can help ease the transition back into school. The ADP classes create the opportunity for mutual academic and personal support among students sharing similar life circumstances. Many ADP students report that these classes helped them make friends and create a support system they kept throughout their college career and beyond.

For adults who have been out of school for some time, returning to college can be a challenging experience. The Adult Degree Program at Lehman College knows how to help. We understand the urgency adults often feel to complete their degree and, at the same time, the importance of balancing the competing demands of work, family, and school. We help students make plans that work for them. Some returning adult students need to strengthen their math or writing skills. To assist them, we offer non-credit refresher courses to prepare them for college-level work.

The Adult Degree Program at Lehman College offers free information sessions about degree options, admissions requirements, and application instructions. The schedule of information sessions and additional details about the ADP program are available on the web at www.lehman.edu/adultdegree.
