A new app is attempting to change the way we shop, saving users time and money. CamFind is a free app for iOS (and Android starting in January) that has mastered visual search, even surpassing Google's attempts. After using the app to take a photo, the app brings up all the info on the product, price comparisons and the option to buy it right there on the spot, all on your phone.
CamFind CEO Dominik Mazur tells us that users have found other inventive ways to use the app. "Say you're at a restaurant. You can take a picture of the awning or menu and immediately get Yelp reviews and recommendations," he says. "Or, you can take a picture of a movie poster and the app will pull up the movie trailer and reviews so you can decide whether or not you want to go see it."
To save money, Mazur recommends using the app to comparison shop while out shopping. It can also help you get your favorite fashion trends for less. If you see an item you like, such as your co-worker's shoes or a friend's dress and take a picture of the item, the app will pull up a list of places selling the item — or a similar style — at the best deal.
Mazur says Google has attempted to master visual search in the past, but is still lagging behind. "Google Goggles are only accurate one out of five or one out of 10 times," he says. "CamFind is accurate more than 90 percent of the time." Sure enough, most users have given the app five-star reviews.
In addition to the picture-taking ability, users can also speak their query; there is also an option to type in the search, though it is not the main focus of the app. "It's the evolution of mobile search," Mazur says. "We're trying to change the way people search by making it easier, taking away the step it takes to type."
