Massachusetts College of Art and Design’s Fashion Department showcases students work in an annual lavish pro runway show. Dubbed Studio 621, this year’s production takes place at the Castle at Park Plaza on Wednesday and will spotlight the talents of a select group of students showing pieces that range in inspiration from Frida Kahlo to Korean architecture.

Designs in ready-to-wear, swimwear, bridal and formalwear will vie with wearable found art pieces made from recycled CDs, egg cartons, can tabs, filmstrips, lottery tickets and window blinds. Some designs incorporate original prints digitally created by students. An angle that takes precedence each year is sustainable practices in fashion, a hot-button topic in an industry not exactly known for being eco-friendly. Collections focusing on sustainability this year have incorporated organic and natural fabrics, some hand-dyed with colors derived from twigs and tea.

“This year’s showcase is about trendy, affordable, healthy fashion,” says MassArt Fashion Department head Sondra Grace. “You’ll see collections using hidden repurposed fabrics and natural dyes offering sustainable life styling for the individual and the planet. MassArt presents what young fashion designers can create with a message and a purpose.”
