Maxwell’s Green’s green is finally in bloom. The newly built apartment block’s communal green space is finally complete, just in time for spring to work its verdant magic on the new property. This final phase of completion for — and finishing touch to — this innovative Somerville residential development will be celebrated with “Spring on the Green,” an official opening party on May 9.
The idea of a public green space is nothing new. Traditionally, English villages grew around a “green” that provided both an important visual and cultural amenity. It was a piece of land that was enjoyed as-is and left as such, tended to by the villagers. Over-development for maximum profit generally results in a loss of sight of the importance of maintaining a natural outdoor communal area. Not so Maxwell’s Green, which even boasts a designated dog run.
“I have a dog, so it’s perfect for me,” says Maureen Curley, 27, who was one of the first residents. She moved in last October, when phase one was finished. “It’s the next best thing to having my own backyard. I can sit on the green or walk, it has a nice community feel.”
For Curley, the amenities were the initial draw.“There’s a gym with free classes, a movie theater you can rent out. Financially, it’s comparable with other properties and I think the rent is quite reasonable for what we get. With the nice weather, I’m either sitting on my balcony or out on the green,” she says.
