Though there is no clear history on how National Sandwich Day, celebrated on Nov. 3, started, we do know how the lunchtime staple was created.
The Earl of Sandwich is credited with popularizing the food and naming it, however, the origins of the sandwich actually date back much further in time, according to PBS.org.
Today, a sandwich is defined “an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with a filling between them, eaten as a light meal,” PBS.org says, citing the Oxford English Dictionary.
