Second Shift: Reversing the stereotype of lazy millennials

You have three jobs. How do you do it all?

Nine to five, I work at Myriad Restaurant Group where I help handle the marketing and PR for restaurants like Nobu, Batard and Tribeca Grill. I’m also a freelance publicist and consultant, so I focus on that after work. I also produce and host my own events, so I focus on those on a project by project basis. Every week is different because it depends on what projects I’m working on.

Do your bosses at your day job mind that you do freelance PR work on the side?

They don’t mind because they know whatever I’m doing [with other brands] is very different than what I do for them. For example, one of my clients is an Italian restaurant, but I only do their social media, not any marketing at all. They know I’m trying to build my resume and career. I like PR and want to experience it in as many different areas as I can. I’m learning how to build my brand just as much as I’m helping other brands build theirs.

How do you find your freelance clients?

So far it’s all been word of mouth. For the Italian restaurant, a friend who came to one of my eventsemailed me about it asking if I wanted to do their social media and I of course said yes.

With all these jobs, do you still have time to see your friends?

The great part about hosting and producing these events is that I can invite my friends. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d have time. I kind of built in friend time and personal time into my work, which is good.

Overall, are you happy balancing these three jobs?

I’m very content. I think all the work I’m doing now will pay off, so I don’t mind working this much because it’s all toward something bigger and better. I wish I had more time to sleep, but I’m very thankful for everything I have. I’m juggling three jobs when some people don’t even have one. I think it’s funny when people say millennials are lazy and don’t like to work. A lot of people I know who are my age work a lot and don’t complain. I’m trying to get rid of that whole stigma. I like working.
