Sneakers are having a moment. A big one. Yeah, yeah, every stylish soul from Copenhagen to Sao Paolo is already sporting a pair of hightop Nike’s, but given that Chanel and Dior just presented the ultimate juxtaposition of high and low by teaming kicks with their S/S ’14 couture collections, it seems the sneaker renaissance has hit a higher level. And this time round, they’re glamorous.
Chanel showed pastel sports shoes with its signature tweed looks — though these aren’t ordinary sneakers. Karl Lagerfeld worked with custom-shoe makerMassaro, and each pair probably costs more than your paycheck —and at the Christian Dior show models glided down the runway in sparkly sneakers. Schiaparelli even jumped on the athletic bandwagon too, coming back from its 60-year hiatus with feather-adorned flip-flops. With autumn/winter ’14 collections being right around the corner, are the couture collections a hint to what we can expect more of? Our feet are doing a happy dance in advance.
