Women are often banned from surf competitions, but in the waters of Indonesia the sport has a more feminine twist. The ‘Surf Discovery’ school runs a contest in which high heels are the dress code, and inventor Anna Lazar told us all about it.

Metro: This makes as much sense as wearing a spacesuit in the desert – why is it happening?

Lazar: I had a very capable student who loved ballet and she asked to try surfing in heels for photos. It was really fun so we decided to make a contest. Thanks Olga!

It seems scary but I want to do it – how can I avoid disaster?

First you have to be crazy and also to love surfing. You have to balance on your toes, never your heels. There will be a competition in October and everybody wants to try.

Can you cheat with baby heels? What are the rules?

Must be classic high heels, at least 9cm. It’s better to wear ones with a zip, as you can lose them in a fall.

There must be a lot of comedy accidents…

Yes, especially when the girls wear short dresses (happy face emoticon). Our contest is like a circus, a nice therapy for both the rider and for the audience, especially if he is a man.

Is it feminist or sexist?

We just want to be women, funny and beautiful, strong and sexy (happy face emoticon).
