Taco Bell goes totally off-script with new breakfast item

Taco Bell is betting that you, or someone you love enough to take there, wants healthier options. At least first thing in the morning.

For those looking to start the day with something a step down from the Waffle Taco, the fast-food chain is adding several high-protein items to its breakfast menu, including Greek yogurt, according to Food Business News.

Other options on the Power Breakfast Menu will be two steak-and-egg items, in bowl and burrito forms for you carb-phobes. But thepièce de résistance will be the Power Greek Yogurt: vanilla bean Greek yogurt with granola. It contains 17 grams of protein and 240 calories, making it by far the most virtuous dollar-for-calorie spend at the Mexican chain.

The new items will be tested in Omaha restaurants beginning next month.

Taco Bell’s other protein-focused initiative, the Cantina Power Menu, which swaps ingredients like ground beef for grilled chicken and steak and refried for black beans, is going national, FBN reported. The menu’s burritos and bowls have more than 20 grams of protein under 500 calories.

We all have our virtuous eating days. Thankfully, the traditional menu is still there when nothing but Doritos Locos Tacos will do.
