Startup The Dating Ring wants to even the score between the coasts and send New York bachelorettes to San Francisco and San Francisco bachelors to New York.
The company has launched Crowdtilt campaigns to do both after the startup opened a San Francisco unit and noticed the male-to-female ratio. CEO Lauren Kay said, "It started out as a joke and it's still a pretty out-there idea." But the joke turned into something more, and now dozens of contributors have donated money to the campaigns and entered the sweepstakes to date on the opposite coast for a weekend. The campaign to send women to San Francisco has outpaced its counterpart: Kay said about 70 people have contributed nearly $2,500. The reverse trip has raised $750.
Women in New York can donate $20 for the chance to seek romance in San Francisco, or they can just buy a plane ticket for $500 and get booked on the trip.
Kay said the cross-country dates will be a mix of one-on-one and group dates. The Dating Ring typically sets up three women with three men in a meeting, but unlike Grouper, matchmakers from the company meet daters before their first date in order to gauge their personality and compatibility with other Dating Ring members.
Kay told us though the idea may seem far-fetched, cross-country connections are certainly not impossible. "I know a lot of people who have fallen in love on vacation, myself included, and continued long distance relationships," she said. "When you add this excitement and opportunity, it's not so crazy anymore. So many people have mobile jobs and there's a small chance or a definite chance this will work out. Long distance relationships are difficult, but so are all relationships."
