The Word: These stars ‘came out’ in 2012

Here are some of the biggest announcements of 2012.

A celebrity coming out of the closet is almost (almost) becoming a non-event; we’re far from the days of Ellen DeGeneres and Lance Bass appearing on magazine covers. But it still makes news. Here are some of the biggest announcements of 2012:

Who: Anderson Cooper, journalist

How: In an e-mail to blogger Andrew Sullivan

What was said: “The fact is, I’m gay,” Cooper wrote. “Always have been, always will be.” Cooper, who was the subject of rumors for years, addressed his silence. “I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something — something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.”

Who: Wade Davis, a cornerback who spent four preseasons with three NFL teams

How: In an interview with Outsports.com

What was said: “You just want to be one of the guys, and you don’t want to lose that sense of family,” Davis said about not coming out sooner. “Your biggest fear is that you’ll lose that camaraderie and family.”

Who: Orlando Cruz, professional boxer

How: In a public announcement

What was said: “I have always been and always will be a proud gay man.”

Who: Matt Bomer, television star

How: Thanking his longtime partner, Simon Halls, and their kids upon accepting an award

What was said: “I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is.”

Who: Lee “Uncle Poodle” Thompson, redneck

How: Appearing on “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”

What was said: Thompson’s homosexuality isn’t a huge to-do on the show; he’s out and proud. As Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson says in the season finale, “ain’t nothin’ wrong with bein’ a little gay.”
