Throw out the fashion rulebook: The style advice to ignore in 2014

The raison d’être of many, many fashion magazines is to rule your wardrobe with a vice-like, arbitrary and undiscriminating grip. No one should dare to brave horizontal stripes. Under no circumstances should any woman in her 40s wear a short skirt.

But it’s all crap really, isn’t it? And while we might need a little nudging in the direction that’s right for us from time to time, we have enough intellectual capacity to know when something works or doesn’t. So we enlisted Julie Ragolia, the fashion director of Man Of The Worldmagazine who’s styled Lady Gaga, contributed to everything from Vogue to Interview and covered Scott Schuman’s The Sartorialist, to help us throw out the fashion rulebook.
