Lily James insists Danny Boyle’s ‘edge’ and Richard Curtis’s ‘heart’ have merged perfect for their Beatles comedy

The combination of Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, Four Weddings And A Funeral’s screenwriter Richard Curtis, Ed Sheeran and the music of The Beatles will almost certainly result in the most English movie of recent memory.

Unfortunately we’re still not exactly sure how all of the above will coagulate together to make such a film, because even though it has been shot, we still don’t know what it is actually called and we’re not actually sure what its plot is.

What we do know is that Lily James is starring in the film, which will be led by Himesh Patel and will also feature Kate McKinnon, Ana de Armas, Lamorne Morris and Joel Fry.

Last month I had the chance to talk to James ahead of the release of “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” during which time I also quizzed her about the untitled Danny Boyle/Richard Curtis extravaganza.

First things first, though, James wanted to reveal that it won’t be a musical, which I had mistakenly labelled it as.

“The Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis film is not a musical. It is centered around the music of The Beatles, that’s the core of the movie and where the plot comes from.”

“But it is not a musical at all. I don’t sing or dance in it.”

James quickly got over my error, and soon started to wax lyrical about the film that the British filmmaking stalwarts are creating, and revealed how Curtis’ heart and Boyle’s edge have merged together.

“There’s definitely a spirit, a humor, a comedy, a joy, a lightness to it. Richard Curtis script is so full of heart and characters that you will fall in love with.”

“But Danny Boyle has directed it so there is an edge, you know, just in the way that Danny Boyle tells stories, moves the camera, creates a truth and rawness to what he does.”

“The collaboration between Richard and Danny is really interesting and exciting. Again, I had a really brilliant time making that movie, too. I have just done a run of films that are so uplifting to make, with great people.”

We’ll get to see what has been achieved with the Boyle/Curtis/Beatles movie when it is finally released on September 13, 2019.
