Lily James has provided an update on Baby Driver 2, revealing that its writer and director Edgar Wright discussed the potential sequel long before the original film was even released.

I recently had the chance to talk to James about “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” in which she plays a younger version of Meryl Streep’s Donna in the energetic musical.

Towards the end of our chat I took the chance to quiz James about a sequel to “Baby Driver,” which was met with critical acclaim and, considering its $34 million budget, proved to be a box office success when it was released back in 2017, as it grossed just under $227 million.

Soon after these achievements, Wright revealed his plans to oversee a sequel, especially as Sony had already told him of their desire for one. Then, in June, Wright uploaded a tweet that teased Ansel Elgort’s Baby “could get back on the road soon …”

So would James be interested?

“Yes! Oh god yes,” was her understandable reaction. “We were discussing that even before the first film had come out. I think we would be crazy not to revisit that film.”

“I think it was just so original. I just think Edgar Wright is a genius. I loved working with him. I think the characters have so much further they could go. Especially Debora and Baby. Baby is so iconic.”

“That film feels so iconic to me, and it was so recent. I am so proud to have been in that film. Despite my part in it I think it is such a cool movie.”

“So I would certainly be onboard. I sort of have spoken to Edgar about his ideas, and he is out of this world, so I have no doubt it would be a great thing to do.”
