Little Big Planet leads video game nominations; Ubisoft Montreal also honoured

“Little Big Planet” led all titles with 10 nominations for the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards honouring video game achievement.

The Sony Computer Entertainment America game for the PlayStation 3 allows gamers to operate small creatures known as Sackboys or Sackgirls across a variety of platforms, customizing them as they go.

The awards are run by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, made up of members of the interactive software industry.

Winners will be announced Feb. 19 during the D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit 2009 in Las Vegas.

In the Overall Game of the Year category, “Little Big Planet” is up against “Fallout 3” (Bethesda Softworks), “Grand Theft Auto IV” (Rockstar North), “Left 4 Dead” (Valve Software), and “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” (Konami Digital Entertainment).

Console Game of the year is between”Fallout 3,” “Grand Theft Auto IV,” Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots,” “Little Big Planet” and “Gears of War 2” (Microsoft Game Studios),

Ubisoft Montreal got four nominations for “Prince of Persia,” one for “Far Cry 2” and one for “Naruto: The Broken Bond.”

EA Canada, based out of Burnaby, B.C., has two titles up for Sports Game of the Year: “FIFA 09” and “NHL 09.” The hockey game was also nominated for outstanding achievement in online game play.

Finalists are determined by panels in each award category. Members of the Academy then vote to determine the winners.
