Liu’s Formosa is a quirky little place with three tables and shelves of knick-knacks, cups and saucers and specialty teas for sale. The charming owner makes you feel like a guest in his home.

It’s a short menu, my friend and I try the spring rolls with their crispy shell and tasty veggie filling. Our curry rice is an unexpectedly huge and attractive arrangement of rice topped with bits of tofu and loads of bite-size chunks of carrots and potatoes. The curry flavour is extremely mild.

The steamed vegetables – broccoli, cabbage, carrot, snow peas, beans and cauliflower – is nicely presented but also mildly spiced. The sushi is tasty – six large rolls with a combination including carrot, cucumber and mushroom.

My steaming hot cup of ginger tea is a soothing treat, as is my friend’s large pot of Earl Grey. The servings are so generous we leave with leftovers, and smiling encouragement to return.
