Live in an 18th century sea captain’s home for $1.95M

Between the skyscrapers and luxury condos, it’s easy to forget how old of a settlement Manhattan is — but some of its structures date back hundreds of years.

Now there’s a chance to own part of that history.

An upper floor duplex condominium located in the third oldest structure in Manhattan just hit the market for $1.95, according to Douglas Elliman, which is listing the home through broker Maria Sales. Built around 1773, Elliman also said it could be the oldest residential building in the borough.

This historic townhouse, located at 273 Water St., was first home to “successful merchant seaman” Captain Rose. Appropriately, the home is located in the Financial District near the Brooklyn Bridge and not far from the South Seaport.

The building was later used as a cobbler shop, apothecary, boarding house, dance hall and warehouse, eventually being redeveloped in 1998 into four condominium apartments.

Today, the unit has been gut-renovated and modernized. On the main level, there is a large dining and entertainment space, open kitchen and full bathroom. The upper level features two large bedrooms, each with a garret window and large skylight, and six closets, including one walk-in. The upper level bathroom has a soaking tub, and there is a washer-dryer.

Historic charm still remains outside, however, with a roof garden, and cobblestone street.

The building is self-managed by the unit owners.
