“Small Mercies” may be Eddie Joyce’s first novel, but it has book reviewers and Pulizer Prize-winning authors paying attention. The story centers around an Italian Irish-American family living on Staten Island, each family member dealing with the death of the family’s youngest son in various ways.

Ten years have passed since Bobby Amendola died as a firefighter responding to the 9/11 attacks, but the wound has scabbed differently for each family member, including his widow and two brothers. This is a book about learning how to accept grief and finding a way to move on, which can be done in a myriad of ways.
