A southeast Calgary park just got a little greener yesterday as 570 new trees found an environmentally friendly home.
WestJet and IKON employees teamed up to plant the new foliage at Calgary’s Carburn Park.
“WestJet is committed to the environment, and our WestJetters are demonstrating that today,” said Richard Bartrem, WestJet vice-president of culture.
WestJet and IKON estimated the planted trees would offset all the paper WestJet’s Calgary campus is expected to use in 2009.
Sixty people took part in yesterday’s event — 30 from WestJet and 30 from IKON.
“This is one of those times where we actually have more people volunteering than we can actually use for the afternoon, unfortunately we have to tell some people sorry we’re full,” said Bartrem.
The City of Calgary and their Adopt-A-Park program provided the trees and land for the tree planting.
“We are always grateful for the support of local businesses, like WestJet and IKON, that help us to meet our goal of a sustainable and increasing urban forest in Calgary,” said Anne Charlton, director for The City of Calgary Parks.
