Local Chilean lends helping hand

Victor Fernandez, a St. Albert firefighter, said it was just blind luck that he and his 10-year-old daughter Balbina were not in Chile during Sunday’s 8.8 earthquake.

Fernandez runs a foundation — Canadian Aid for Fire Services Abroad — that helps firefighters in Third World countries.

The Chilean native takes fire trucks and other equipment that is outdated by Canadian standards and ships them over to Third World countries where they are still useable.

Fernandez was supposed to be taking a couple of fire trucks over to Chillan, Chile at the end of February, but paperwork delayed the trip pushing it back until May.
