Local college wins prestigious broadcast awards

Having students succeed after graduating from Humber College’s journalism program is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how successful this program is.

A few weeks back, this program won two top awards at the prestigious annual College Media Advisors Convention in New York City.

The Humber TV News: Holiday Special, which is written and produced by final year students, won the David L. Adams Apple Award for best in show for a television news program. The school’s one-hour news radio show, @Humber, won the David L. Adams Apple Award for the second year in a row for best in show for a radio public affairs news program.

The program co-ordinator, Mike Karapita, says nothing can compare to the honour.
“It’s just amazing. We’re really proud of our students, our teachers and our terrific digital broadcast newsroom,” Karapita tells Metro. “Winning in New York was, without a doubt, a highlight of the year. It’s more proof that what we’re doing here at Humber really works.”

Students in the broadcast section have to go to New York themselves and enter their work for competition. Print students can enter some of their work in advance, but Karapita adds that you don’t know until you get to Manhattan who the biggest winners are.

“It feels like you’re at the Academy Awards and, I have to say that our Canadian contingent was just over the moon when we won,” he says.
