A call to clean up the wrestling mats

Sheila Mauirello believes her son, Nick, a high-school junior and member of the varsity wrestling team become ill after wrestling on unclean mats.

There are currently no regulations in place mandating how clean schools must keep their mats.

“Our school is very good about hygiene with the mats but a lot of other schools aren’t," said Mauirello. "One school where Nick wrestled had one shower and it didn’t even have hot water. So the wrestlers weren’t even showering.”

Assemblyman Steven Englebright told Metro he would like to see legislation changed that would regulate mat hygiene in schools.
