Two Emergency Medical Technicians were able to escape from their burning ambulance yesterday afternoon.
The Cataldo ambulance caught fire about 12:15 p.m. on the Jamaicaway near Pond Street, according to a fire official. It was not transporting a patient at the time.
As firefighters poured water on the flames coming from the front cab an oxygen tank exploded.
The force of the explosion sent the emergency light bar on the roof flying from the ambulance, a fire department spokesman said.
The explosion noise also caused two firefighters to be sent to the hospital to have their hearing checked.
A cause had not been determined at press time.
