The man accused of torturing and abandoning a dog known as “Puppy Doe” was recently indicted for stealing from an elderly Quincy woman for whom he was supposed to act as a caretaker.
Radoslaw Czerkawski, 32, formerly of Quincy, was indicted Fridayon two counts of larceny over $250, one count of larceny over $250 from a person over the age of 60 and one count of attempted larceny, according to the Norfolk district attorney’s office. He will be arraigned Tuesday in Norfolk Superior Court.
Czerkawski, a Polish national, was working as a caretaker for an elderly woman in her Whitwell Street home in Quincy last year when the abuse of the dog allegedly happened, authorities have said.
Czerkawski pleaded not guilty last year to a 12-count indictment charging him with animal cruelty.The pit bull-type dog nicknamed “Puppy Doe” was found Aug. 31 in Quincy. The approximately 1-year-old dog was less than half of what her weight should have been. She also had various wounds and her tongue was purposely cut to look like a serpent’s tongue. Animal welfare workers said the case was one of the worst instances of dog abuse they’ve seen.
The case of “Puppy Doe” earned international attention as authorities searched for the person responsible and later arrested Czerkawski. Some people turned out for Czerkawski’s initial court appearance last year chanting “justice for Puppy Doe.”
After his arrest, New Bedford Police said they were also charging Czerkawski with larcenybecause they said he stole $6,000 from a church in a 2012 scheme. He allegedly told the church he wanted to become a pastor, police said.
