Another Big Dig make good OK’d

An influx of stimulus cash will help fund connections between new bridges and a network of parks left isolated along the Charles River, crossing off one of the remaining promises associated with the Big?Dig.

“Being able to [access] these remarkable new public spaces will be a huge change for the quality of life for East Cambridge and Charlestown residents,” said Ian Bowles, the state’s secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

Transit advocates have fought for the Big?Dig transportation commitments, the Conservation Law Foundation has even sued the state for action. As a result, the Blue Line now has new six-train cars and station platforms, and while other key projects delayed and discussed over the years still remain, progress is afoot.

The Green Line extension to Somerville and Medford now has a draft environmental impact report and the MassDOT board yesterday authorized a contract for the Four Corners commuter rail station in Dorchester for the Fairmount line. Both projects stem from Big Dig commitments.

Rafael Mares, attorney with the Conservation Law Foundation, said fulfilling these commitments is critical to the environment, economy and equity for urban neighborhoods.
