Arrests made in Wal-Mart DVD knife flap

A man and a woman who attempted to steal DVDs from a Massapequa Wal-Mart and brandished a knife upon being caught have been arrested.

Seventh Squad detectives said Fred Puryear, 39, and Bernadette T. Robledo, 30, both of Mastic, were in Wal-Mart at 200 Sunrise Highway on Dec. 14 with their 3-year-old child when they selected numerous DVDs from a display rack, put them in a diaper bag and left the store.

The couple was approached by loss prevention officers from the store, police said, and Puryear presented a blade from his pocket and swung it at them. A struggle ensued, and the knife fell to the ground where it was picked up by the defendant Robledo — who threatened the officer with it. No injuries were reported during the incident.

While Puryear was arrested at the scene and charged with robbery first degree and endangering the welfare of a child, Robledo was arrested Sunday at her home and charged with robbery first degree, possession of a dangerous weapon fourth degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
