Police are looking for a man they said assaulted a gay journalist in Midtown earlier this month.

Randy Gener, 46, was attacked while walking home from a party about 3 a.m. on Jan. 17, according to police.


He was found with severe head trauma by officers near Seventh Avenue and West 54th Street, a few blocks from his apartment.

Authorities said an unknown man punched Gener in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head.

Police said the suspect fled in a grey, four-door Nissan with Mississippi license plate KAT397.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, in his 20s, roughly 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds. Police said he was last seen wearing black jeans and a black jacket.

Gener was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he remains in stable condition, recovering from brain surgery.

Gener is gay and has bylines in the New York Times, the New York Daily News and other publications.

Police said the assault is being investigated as a possible hate crime by a hate crimes task force.

Friends held a vigil for Gener on Sunday night.His family set up an online fundraiser to pay for his medical expenses, with more than $32,000 has already raised.
