A suspect punched a cop and escaped arrest after trying to steal sneakers in Brooklyn, police said.

The suspect assaulted the officer in a Downtown Brooklyn subway station last week when police tried to arrest him for attempted larceny.

Police said the man punched an officer in the face and then pushed him down the stairs of the Hoyt Street-Fulton Mall station about 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 17.

The officer sustained injuries to the back of his head, hands, right arm and back. He was taken to an area hospital and released.

The suspect is described as black, 6 feet tall, 190 pounds and has black eyes, a beard and black hair, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the assault to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), submit tips online or text 274637 (CRIMES), then enter TIP577.
