Barclays Center an early adopter of New York City’s new soda ban

The city’s 16.1-oz. soda ban doesn’t go into effect until March 13, but officials from the new Barclays Center announced today they will voluntarily implement the soda restriction early.

When the center opens at the end of this month, on Sept. 28, the largest drink size holder there will be 16 ounces, according to Barclays developer, Forest City Ratner Bruce Ratner.

“New York City has set a standard for the country and the world when it comes to public health and we are very proud to be the first to adopt the standards for sugary beverages in our new venue,” said Ratner on Thursday.

Though the Barclays Center is the first major venue to make such a decision, “I expect many other restaurants and places of business to do the same thing,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg predicted.
