Black bear takes up residence in Brookline tree (UPDATED)

State environmental officials confirmed today that the bear found hanging out in a Brookline tree this morning was the same bear roaming around Cape Cod earlier this month.

The 200-pound black bear was caught on the Cape about two weeks ago. After it was captured it was relocated to Central Massachusetts. But the bear, apparently having an affinity for Eastern Massachusetts, wandered about 100 miles and ended up in Brookline this morning.

Officials said that this time they will transport him to a location further away in Western Massachusetts.

The bear was spotted in a tree near Pine Road and Hammond Street about 7:30 a.m.

Police said he was up there for about two hours and animal rescue officials were requested to the scene.

The bear was tranquilized and fell out of the tree just before 10 a.m.

Police realized the rarity of the incident and had a little fun.

“It’s back.. Bear resting in a tree in south Brookline. Pine road. Officers on scene keeping quite. Shhhh,” Brookline police posted on their Twitter feed.
