Mayor Bloomberg spoke out yesterday in response to a controversy sparked by an anti-Israel forum sponsored by Brooklyn College.
The mayor stated that though he is a big supporter of Israel, the government has no right to dictate what kind of discussions should take place at a university, according to The Daily News.
A group of 10 City Council members last week threatened to cut funding to the college if the event, scheduled for today, proceeds.
Critics of the forum have stated that the discussion would be one-sided with scheduled speakers representing BDS—Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions—a campaign that calls for penalizing Israel financially for its treatment of Palestinians.
