"The typhoon that struck this weekend was devastating and heartbreaking," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday. "It really hit home for our city's strong Filipino community."
Contributions will be directed to reputable organizations providing on-the-ground relief, the mayor said.
"People from around the world have always been with us when we needed help and we've got to make sure we're there when they need it," Bloomberg said.
"I know New Yorkers are not hesitant to show their support for our friends in the Philippines," he added.
