Boating accident kills one, injures two

FREEPORT – One man was killed and another two injured in a boating accident Wednesday afternoon.

Freeport resident Corey Weyant, 54, was returning from a goose-hunting trip at 1:30 p.m. when his 19-foot boat struck a wooden pole in the Woodcleft channel. Weyant was ejected from the boat and struck his head on the pole.

Weyant was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was declared dead.

Beer and rum were found on board the boat, although police are unsure if Weyant had been drinking. Toxicology tests have been done, but results could take up to a month or longer.

Weyant’s boat was traveling between 30-35 mph when he hit pole #13, a marker pole in the channel to tell boaters which way to go.

Two fellow hunters, Owen Patterson of Freeport and 49-year-old Baldwin resident William Wittenberg, were also injured in the collision. Wittenberg was airlifted to NUMC with a back injury and Patterson suffered minor injuries.
