Boston launches aggressive ‘Text-a-Tip’ ad campaign

Mayor Thomas Menino and Police Commissioner Ed Davis are again promoting the “Text a Tip” program to get more clues to crimes in the city — this time, with more aggressive advertising.

With a series of recent deaths from shootings, the city has unveiled a new multimedia advertising campaign promoting the initiative.

Posters and billboards will go up in MBTA cars and at 50 bus shelters around the city to target areas that have been plagued by violence this summer, encouraging citizens to send in information they may know about unsolved crimes.

A PSA will also be airing on the Fenway Jumbotron during Red Sox pre-games for the rest of the season and police will distribute 5,000 brochures throughout the community.

“Text a Tip” made its first appearance in 2007, making Boston the first city in the country to provide residents with the ability to send crime tips anonymously to police via text message.

The Crime Stoppers Unit has received close to 4,000 tips since it launched by citizens texting the word the word “TIP” to CRIME (27463).
