Boston Police: Man killed himself in front of cops investigating his son's death

A Boston man took his own life Saturday as he was confronted by police who were investigating the death of his young son.

A Mattapanman took his own life Saturday as he was confronted by police who were investigating the death of his young son.

According to Boston Police, 49-year-old Patrick Marcelin stabbed himself to death in an apparent suicide as officers arrived at a Morton Street apartment around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officers were there to talk to him about the death of his son, 6, who was found in cardiac arrest around 9:30 a.m. at Marcelin's home on Devon Street. the child, whose name was not released because the manner of his death had yet to be determined, had been in Marcelin's care.

Marcelin could not be located following the boy's death, police said, prompting a search.

A family member alerted police that Marcelin had made statements on Friday expressing an intention to harm himself, and the search for his whereabouts intensified.

Police said on their blog Saturday that Marcelin answered the door at815 Morton St.with a kitchen knife in his hand "and began to injure himself."

"Placing themselves in harm's way, detectives made heroic efforts to disarm him, took the knife away, and called for medical assistance," police said.

Marcelin was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Neither death investigation is expected to result in charges against any person, police said.
