Bridge and tunnel tolls going up

By a 12-1 vote, the MTA board voted yesterday to hike tolls at the seven bridges and two tunnels it controls. Cash tolls will increase by $1 per car to $6.50 at major crossings and drivers who use E-ZPass will pay 5 percent more, to $4.80, at major crossings. MTA head Jay Walder said charging cash-paying drivers more is a way to encourage more people to use E-Z Pass.

The toll hike will take effect Dec. 30.
