Bronx state Senator Ruben Diaz refuses to apologize for comparing abortion to the Holocaust

State Sen. Ruben Diaz, who represents the Bronx in the New York state Senate, refuses to capitulate to calls for him to apologize after he compared abortion to the Holocaust.

In an email Diaz sent out to his constituents Tuesday, regarding a piece of pro-choice legislation currently before the state Legislature, Diaz wrote, “(Hitler) chose to send the Jews to Auschwitz … That was not their choice, that was Hitler’s choice. Murderers, assassins and criminals are pro-choice. They choose to put a gun to your head and take your life. That is not your choice. That is their choice.”

Today, the Anti-Defamation League is demanding Diaz apologize, but the Democratic politican stands by his remarks.

“I said Hitler was also pro-choice,” Diaz said to Metro today. “People are asking me to apologize for what I said, but who will apologize to those babies? Who will apologize for the killing of babies?”

“My intention is not to offend anyone,” he continued. “Maybe they don’t believe abortion is a killing, but I believe abortion is a killing. It’s a holocaust.”

This is not the first time he’s has equated abortion to Hitler’s killing of the Jews during WWII.

In 2005, he called abortion “the American Holocaust” and said, “I want to compare Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust to what is happening to abortion in America.”

“While the senator is certainly entitled to his passionate political and religious opinions, invoking the Holocaust and the Nazi regime’s murderous policies, which resulted in the deaths of six million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust, is deeply offensive,” said Ron Meier, the New York director of the ADL in a statement. “And it has no place in civil political discourse.”

Hardly ‘All in the Family’

Diaz is a Democrat who represents a large swath of the Bronx in Albany. He’s served in office since 2003. He’s also a Pentecostal minister who has hardly been shy about expressing his opinions on social issues in the past.

When the New York state legislature legalized gay marriage last June, Diaz said he was proud of his vote against and warned that gay marriage would be a sign of doomsday.

“I always knew it would pass in New York, and if they allow it here the whole nation goes. But I am Christian first and then a Democrat,” he said. “I always vote my conscience.”

Interestingly, Diaz’s 23-year-old granddaughter, Erica Diaz, is a lesbian. She spoke out at a “Rally to Protect” marriage Diaz held in the Bronx last May.

“You cannot tell someone that you love them and stay silent when people call for their death,” Erica wrote in an op-ed for the New York Post. “‘Love’ is empty when you say someone’s life isn’t natural.”
