Jurors deciding the fate of James “Whitey” Bulger were shown dozens of disturbing photographs of the dirtied bones that were found in a secret gravesite where the gangster discarded his alleged victims.
Ann Marie Mires, a forensic anthropologist who previously worked with the state medical examiner’s office, was the only witness on the stand Wednesday in the alleged mob boss’ trial.
Mires talked about working through a snowy and cold January night in 2000 to dig up the remains near Florian Hall in Dorchester. The area was searched after former Bulger associate Kevin Weeks identified the area where he, Bulger and gangster Stephen Flemmi buried the bodies in 1985.
“There’s a lot of roots going through this material so it speaks to how long it’s been in the ground,” Mires said.
The bones of Arthur Barrett, Deborah Hussey and John McIntyre were found buried under dirt in an area about 2 1/2 feet deep.
Mires testified that medical examiners cut open McIntyre’s skull they found the bullet that he was allegedly shot in the head with by Bulger. Inside his skull was a green stain from the copper bullet jacket where it came to a rest.
Mires’ testimony helped support the testimony given by Weeks on Monday and Tuesday about the killings allegedly at the hands of Bulger. Bulger’s lawyer attempted to paint Weeks as a liar during cross examination.
