Bushwick community space offers activists a place to create and learn

A new Bushwick community space offers community activists to meet, create, learn and throw back a few cold ones.

MayDay, located214 Starr Street in Bushwick, is still a work in progress, said Mcnair Scott, one of the founders. The three story warehouse, which includes an event space, a roof ecostation and co-working space, will eventually include a first-floor bar and cafe, Scott said.

Scott said one of the main focuses of MayDay is confronting neighborhood issues, such as gentrification, but also providing a space for activists to work together and have "good cross pollination."

MayDay has teamed up with activist groups planning to walk in Sunday's People's Climate March, who are using the space to create posters and floats.

"It's been a great collaboration with them," Scott said, adding the importance of having someplace to come back to and "decompress" after major events like the climate march.

There's no set opening for the bar, and the timeline depends on construction and getting the necessary permits from the city. MayDay is already holding open hours, and organizers have been giving tours of the site.

"Before we were showing people what it could be. Now we're showing them what is happening now," Scott said, adding they're looking for more input for the future as the space evolves.
