Cab driver Gurmeet Singh arrested, charged with rape in Williamsburg

Police arrested a cab driver yesterday for the alleged knifepoint rape of a passenger in Williamsburg in May.

Gurmeet Singh, 40, a Queens resident, was arrested and charged with rape, robbery, assault, menacing and sex abuse, according to the NYPD.

Singh’s arrest stems from a May case, when a 26-year-old woman told cops
that a cab driver raped her while threatening her with a knife. The alleged rape happened after the cabbie picked her up after a night out in Williamsburg and she requested a ride into Manhattan.

According to the police, the driver allegedly pulled over, tied the woman’s hands together with a scarf and raped her before pushing her out of
the cab. The suspect also stole her phone and $20, cops said, and she suffered lacerations on her hands and feet.

Police searched for the cabbie wanted in that rape, but were unable to find Singh until a woman in Harlem said she was raped by a cab driver in September.

According to the New York Post, investigators said were able to identify a few numbers of either the cab’s plate or medallion number in that alleged rape. They matched the numbers to Singh’s cab, according to the Post.

While Singh has only been charged for the May alleged rape, he is a suspect in the September case.

Singh, who has been driving a New York City taxicab since 1999, has had his TLC license suspended, pending the outcome of the criminal case.
