Cambridge pride: Third gayest in US

Forget about Northampton or Boston. They don’t even come close.

The gayest city in Massachusetts is Cambridge, according to The Advocate.

Cambridge placed third in the LGBT magazine’s ranking of the “Gayest Cities in America, 2012.”

The magazine cited the popularity of the city’s previous three openly gay mayors. It also credited the City Council for its work on antidiscrimination protections for transgender people.

And it didn’t leave out the nightlife, citing the Paradise, which is billed as New England’s only gay club with hot male dancers six nights a week.

Cambridge’s place in the top three in the nation might be surprising, but so is the methodology used.

Instead of compiling another list that ranked New York City, San Francisco and even Northampton, the magazine acknowledged it used “subjective criteria” including number of LGBT elected officials, number of WNBA teams and number of LGBT bookstores.

City officials said the distinction is welcome.

“What this distinction really means is that in Cambridge the rights of everyone … are respected,” said City Councilor E. Denise Simmons, who is also openly gay.
