Republican mayoral hopeful and supermarket magnate John Catsimatidis will have to pay $3.9 million to the opposing lawyers in a case dating back to 2004, a Manhattan appeals court ruled yesterday.

The billionaire had vigorously opposed the hefty legal bill for workers at Catsimatidis's Gristedes stores who years ago sued him for unpaid wages and overtime, saying it was greater than the $3.5 million settlement reached in 2009.

Catsimidis told the New York Post he was "disappointed" in the ruling, which comes two years after he reportedly considered shutting down Gristedes and filing for bankruptcy.

His net worth is estimated at $3 billion.
