Charges filed in crash that killed city cop Brian Lorenzo

The Philadelphia District Attorney officially charged the suspect in the death of Highway Patrol Officer Brian Lorenzo, who was struck by a vehicle heading the wrong way on Interstate 95 early Sunday.

John Leck Jr., 47, of the Levittown section of Bucks County, faces third degree murder, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault while DUI, DUI and involuntary manslaughter, the District Attorney’s Office said in a statement yesterday.

Leck was arraigned yesterday morning and is being held without bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 25. A spokeswoman said a photo of Leck was still unavailable yesterday because he remained hospitalized.

A gray Audi driving against traffic – southbound in the highway’s northbound lanes – allegedly struck Lorenzo’s department-issued motorcycle around 3:15 a.m. near the Cottman Avenue exit in Northeast Philadelphia.

Arrangements

Lorenzo’s viewing will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Givnish Funeral Home in Northeast Philadelphia. A public viewing will be held 7:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Funeral services will begin at noon. burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem.
