Police in Chelmsford are seeking a Lowell man for questioning regarding a burglary in which the man’s keys were found left at the scene.

Joel Nieves, 28, is wanted by police for arrest on charges of armed burglary.

On June 28, a resident returned home after spending a day out of state and found his sliding door open. The resident was on the phone with 911 when the suspect approached and threatened to kill the resident. The resident swung a flashlight at the suspect, which caused the suspect to flee.

Police said they believe the suspect had returned to the scene to retrieve a backpack that he had left at the scene. Inside the backpack were multiple items from the resident’s home as well as a set of keys that did not belong to the resident.

Detectives took the keys to a locksmith who were able to trace back the keys to an apartment where Nieves had been staying, police said.
