Chinatown fire displaces 14, injures rescuers

Nearly 60 firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze yesterday in a Chinatown building that caused

$1 million in damage and left 14 people homeless.

Three firefighters were taken to the hospital for minor injuries suffered during the 12:37 p.m. fire at 11 Hudson St., said Steve MacDonald, a fire department spokesman.

The department called in the American Red Cross to assist 11 adults and three children who were displaced by the blaze, which also damaged the Happy Family Food Market.

MacDonald said investigators determined the cause of the fire to be an electrical short circuit in a ceiling in the front entrance way of the building.

Building inspectors were called in because firefighters noticed cracks in the brick facade and stonework of the building that was “in rough condition.”
