Church teen leader admits rape of girl

A 30-year-old youth group leader admitted in a Central Islip court yesterday to raping a 12-year-old girl who was a member of his Patchogue church group.

According to prosecutors, Juan Carlos Amaya, a group leader at the Iglesia Evangelica Refugio De Salvacion Church, took a 12-year-old girl to his Bellport home on Davidson Avenue in May 2010 and forced the terrified girl to have sexual intercourse with him.

“He was part of the church music group. He played the guitar and would teach the kids how to play. Everyone really like him,” a church parishioner said to Metro on the condition of anonymity. “I’m not sure how many kids he was teaching guitar to, but he got along with everybody.”

The parishioner, who was unaware of the arrest, expressed shock and disgust when told of the charges against Amaya.

“Oh no. That is awful,” said the parishioner. “That does not sound like the Juan I know.”

Amaya admitted in writing to having sex with the girl and that he knew she was underage at the time of the sexual incident.

Amaya is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador with no prior criminal record.

Church Pastor Roberto Sanchez was unavailable for comment.
